What Is a QR Code?

A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information such as URLs,
text, phone numbers, or Wi-Fi credentials. First invented in 1994 by Denso Wave for tracking
automotive parts, QR codes are now used everywhere — from restaurant menus and business cards
to payment systems and boarding passes. Any smartphone camera can scan them instantly.

How to Use This QR Code Generator

Type or paste any text or URL into the input field and click “Generate QR Code.” Choose a size
that fits your use case — 256px works well for screens, while 512px or 1024px is better for
printing. Select an error correction level based on how likely the code will be partially
obscured: L (7%) is fine for clean digital use, while H (30%) is ideal for printed codes that
might get scratched or covered by a logo. Once generated, click “Download PNG” to save the image.

Why Error Correction Matters

QR codes use Reed-Solomon error correction to remain scannable even when damaged. Higher
correction levels add more redundant data, so the code stays readable even if up to 30% is
obscured. The trade-off is that higher correction produces a denser (more complex) QR pattern.
For most web URLs, Medium (15%) is a good balance between density and resilience.

QR Code Best Practices

For optimal scanning, ensure your QR code is at least 2cm × 2cm for close-range scanning and larger for distance scanning. Maintain high contrast between the code and background (dark code on light background works best). Always test your QR code with multiple devices before printing.
